Fascial Manipulation At The Boxgrove Clinic

We are fortunate at The Boxgrove Clinic to include Jane Haydon in the Soft Tissue Therapy team. Jane is a qualified phyiotherapist and has over 25 years of clinical experience in treating muskuloskeletal dysfunction. She is one of just two fully certified ‘Stecco Fascial Manipulation’ practitioners in the UK. Stecco Fascial Manipulation is a specific approach to fascial manipulation developed by Dr. Carla Stecco and her family, who are Italian physicians and researchers that focus on the study of fascia and its role in the human body. Their extensive research into the anatomy and biomechanics of fascia, as well as their clinical experience puts them at the forefront of this fast evolving field of therapy.

An Introduction To Fascial Manipulation

Fascia is a continuous 3D web of dense connective tissue covering and connecting your whole body. Tension of the fascia in one part of your body can in turn cause pain and dysfunction in another area of the body.

The role of fascia is vital. It is necessary for regulating movement of both your musculoskeletal system and for your internal organ function. It is also a pain sensitive structure and helps to control your proprioception (perception of movement).

As fascia covers our entire musculoskeletal system including our nerves, blood vessels and bones, treatment can be effective for both acute and chronic conditions.

FAQs about Fascial Manipulation

Fascial manipulation is a manual therapy technique that focuses on treating the fascia, a connective tissue that surrounds muscles, bones, and organs in the body.

Fascia is a continuous 3D web of dense connective tissue covering and connecting our whole body. Tension of the fascia in one part of your body can in turn cause pain and dysfunction in another area of the body.

Acute trauma, chronic movement or strain e.g. posture and immobilisation are some of the causes of our myofascia becoming stuck. Internal inflammation, infection and surgery are also known to densify our internal fascia and skin.

During treatment, fascial tissue is physically manipulated to create friction, heat and gliding of very specific areas of stuck or ‘densified’ fascia. This kick-starts an enzyme release in our body which is vital to restoring movement and the alleviation of pain.

The level of discomfort during fascial manipulation can vary depending on the individual and the specific technique used. Some discomfort may be experienced, but it should not be excessively painful.
